SKILL SESSIONS
Back to Back
Goal
Teach the kids to run score or defend.
Set up - 6 cones, 15m x 30m rectangle, with cones on the corners and at half way
2 teams, lined up at half way with you
Send 1 attacker and 1 defender
Players race around their corner cone, enter the field and try to score

Goal
Get the kids to learn the position and practice their defence
Set up - 6 cones, 7m apart in a line
Kids are grouped into 3s and given a number - 3/2/1
Talk through the positions and how 1 guards 1, 2 guards 2 etc
Talk through how sometimes we have 1&2 guard 2 for a squeeze defence
Kids are given number combinations, they race out to their cones, touch them and race back
e.g. 3,2,1 - all 3 race out, touch their cone and return; 5 - 3 & 2 race out to touch their cone; 33 (3s race out and touch both #3 cones);
If I call a small number e.g. 5 - do the math and go!
If I call a large number e.g. 32 - read the pattern and go!

2-man
Goal
The kids learn 2-man
Set up - 5 cones, 10m apart in a line (2 rows)
Teams of 2, line up and work their way to the other end, dumping and splitting left and right
Walk them through it, then speed them up

Velodromes
Goal
The kids race each other in a velodrome style, running race
Set up - 3 cones, 10m apart in a line
2 teams (3 per team), line up either side of the middle cone with you, facing opposite directions
They race around their end cone, down the other side, around the other end cone and back to the middle cone (where they started)
The front player drops off and the other 2 keep running
Next lap, the front player drops off and the last players sprint the final lap

After each lap, lead runner lies down and other runners jump him

Ultimate Tag
Goal
Let the kids run and laugh.
Set up: 1x large square, approx 15m x 15m.
Just run and touch, everyone is a tagger
When you are tagged, you kneel until the person who tagged you gets tagged, then you can get back up
50/50 tags are settled by paper / scissors / rock

Goal
Teach the tamariki how to do a strong quickee with 2 options (outside or inside)
Set up - 1 cone 7m from the tryline and 2 cones on the tryline to score
2 attackers, plant and perform a strong quickee
Pair up the kids and use a stopwatch to time them

Slide Dives
Goal
Teach them how to slide dive, increase them to 1v1 if needed.
Set up: 5x squares (7m x 7m), with one side as the try line and one side for the defender.
Key skills
Range - identify their range from the tryline
Frogger - get into position
Press - ball onto the ground
Motor boat - point of the ball pointing up like boat
Mow the lawns - slide along the ground to the tryline

Coach stands at tryline and they slide under his touch

With stopwatch - time them and watch them get faster and faster
Railway Tracks
Goal
Teach the kids to run at speed and race as a team.
Set up - 2 rows of cones, 6 in each row, 5m apart - 25m long
First child sprints to the first cone and lies flat on the ground
Next child springs, jumps the child on the ground and lies at the next cone
Continue until all kids cross the last cone

Squishy Relays
Goal
Teach the kids to run and plant at speed .
Set up - 3 cones in a line, per team (usually 2 teams).
Sprint and plant at 1st cone
Continue racing to 2nd cone, round it come back and scoop the ball
Continue racing back to the line
Pass ball to next player
