SKILLS SESSIONS

SCORING - Slide Dives

Goal

Teach them how to slide dive, increase them to 1v1 if needed.

Set up: 6 x squares (7m x 7m), with one side as the try line and one side for the defender.

Key skills

  • Range - identify their range from the tryline

  • Frogger - get into position

  • Press - ball onto the ground

  • Jet boat - point of the ball pointing up like boat

  • Mow the lawns - slide along the ground to the tryline

Extensions

Open Side / Short Side

Goal

Teach the tamariki so that they can identify the Short Side and which hand to touch with

Key skills

  • Know short side from the open side

  • Used on the try line

  • Teach them WHY we protect the short side

  • Corner / Shuts rely on protecting the short side

  • Profiling for the touch - which hand

Quickee

Goal

Teach the tamariki how to do a strong quickee with 2 options (outside or inside)

Set up - 1 cones, 7m from the tryline

  • 2 attackers, plant and perform a strong quickee

Key skills

  • Strong plant and split

  • High speed to draw the defender

  • Take the correct option - inside or outside

Extensions

  • Add a defender

  • Add a cone and a stop watch

  • Add a pass option

  • Add a second defender

Velodromes

Goal

The kids race each other in a velodrome style, running race

Set up - 3 cones, 10m apart in a line

  • 2 teams (3 per team), line up either side of the middle cone with you, facing opposite directions

  • They race around their end cone, down the other side, around the other end cone and back to the middle cone (where they started)

  • The front player drops off and the other 2 keep running

  • Next lap, the front player drops off and the last players sprint the final lap

  • Add a ball, plant and scoop at the end of each lap

  • After each lap, lead runner lies down and other runners jump him

Corey Super Pass

Goal

Teach the tamariki how to do a strong 5-10m pass while running

Set up: 4 base cones, 5m apart for distance purposes, and 2 cones to make a tryline

  • Pair up the kids, with a ball between them

  • Ball carrier runs a tight turn around first cone, then passes to partner

  • The catcher times to run with them from the base line

  • Start with a small pop pass, then extend

  • Score on the tryline

  • Change sides, pass both sides

Key skills

  • Timing and distance of the pass

  • Timing of the runner

  • Spiral passes for 10m+

  • Add a defender

  • Add slide dive

Passing and Catching

Goal

Teach the tamariki how to do a strong 5-10m pass from stationary

Set up: 4 rows of cones, 5m apart for spacing purposes

  • Pair up the kids, with a ball between them

  • Start them 5m apart and complete 10 passes and sit down

  • Move the kids back, extend them to 10m and 15m

  • Bring them back to 5m and the completion rate should be better

  • Change arm, pass both sides

Key skills

  • Targets for the catcher

  • Elephant arms to increase power

  • Spiral passes for 10m+

Extensions

  • Catcher can run in to catch short passes

  • Watch an adult throw

  • Add a pass option

  • Add a second defender

DRAW AND PASS -

Back to Back

Goal

Teach the kids to run score or defend.

Set up - 6 cones, 15m x 30m rectangle, with cones on the corners and at half way

  • 2 teams, lined up at half way with you

  • Send 1 attacker and 1 defender

  • Players race around their corner cone, enter the field and try to score

  • Vary the numbers and size

Knighting and Rucking

Goal

Teach the tamariki about rucking and knighting.

Key skills

  • Plant both sides, with correct hand

  • Initiate touch, on the hip or pocket

  • Hold ball in both hands, so defender cannot tell which side

  • Short steps, so you can change direction

  • Lunging haka stance

  • Eyes up before plant

Extensions

  • Add defenders

  • 2v1 quickee

  • Defender can knight to make plant hard


GAME 1 - Modified rules

2 or 3 second Touch

Goal

Kids play a game but work on tactics that keep the game flowing

  • Normal game of Touch but once Touch has been made, the attack have 2-3 seconds to pick up and pass to next team members.

  • If not performed in the time frame, ball is given to the opposition

*You can adjust time to suit level

  • Working as a team

  • Performing the plant without delay

Extensions

  • Add new rules to involve more players e.g. 2 passes every plant etc. Change position on the field wingers have a turn in the middle

GAME 2 - Modified rules

3 drives to the wing TOUCH

Goal

Kids play a game but work on tactics that keep the game flowing with the use of 3 man plays and opening space for end of set plays


  • Normal game of Touch but every handover, the attack have to do 3 drives towards the side line

  • If 3 drives are performed - team gets 2 points. 5 points for 3 drives and a try. 2 points for a try with no drives.

*You can adjust defence distance to suit level... bigger 7s will allow more time for attack to perform task.

RUCKING YARDS - Relays

(2 man & 3 man)

Goal

Teach or improve 2 man and 3 mans at speed .

Set up - 5 cones in a line, per team (usually 2 teams).

  • Perform 2 mans or 3 mans up the coned line

  • Team members waiting at the end will perform the other way

  • Continue racing until you perform the recommended number

Key skills

  • 2 man – calling sides, dump split, quick ‘pop’ pass, acting half foot placement

  • 3 man – driving forward, pass and wrap, dump and walk forward, calling sides

Extensions

  • Add a player half way through relay e.g. 2 x 2 man and then 3rd man gets involved

(Broncos)

Goal

Let's see how fast and fit our tamariki are:

Set up - 5x cones in a line at 20m, 40m, 60m, 80m

  • Boys v boys, girls v girls

  • Start with a group sprint, heats of 9-10 - 40m sprint

  • Top 3 from each group go through to finals

  • Final heat of 9-10 to find top 3 fastest

Then, onto Bronco test

  • All boys together, at the same time

  • All girls together, at the same time

  • Find top 5 fastest, using stop watch
