Open Side / Short Side

Goal

Teach the tamariki so that they can identify the Short Side and which hand to touch with

Key skills

  • Know short side from the open side

  • Used on the try line

  • Teach them WHY we protect the short side

  • Corner / Shuts rely on protecting the short side

  • Profiling for the touch - which hand

Extensions

  • Profiling the pre-touch - same hand, same foot

3v2 defenders

Knighting and Rucking

Goal

Teach the tamariki about rucking and knighting.

Key skills

  • Plant both sides, with correct hand

  • Initiate touch, on the hip or pocket

  • Hold ball in both hands, so defender cannot tell which side

  • Short steps, so you can change direction

  • Lunging haka stance

  • Eyes up before plant

Extensions

  • Add defenders

  • 2v1 quickee

  • Defender can knight to make plant hard

Velodromes

Goal

The kids race each other in a velodrome style, running race

Set up - 3 cones, 10m apart in a line

  • 2 teams (3 per team), line up either side of the middle cone with you, facing opposite directions

  • They race around their end cone, down the other side, around the other end cone and back to the middle cone (where they started)

  • The front player drops off and the other 2 keep running

  • Next lap, the front player drops off and the last players sprint the final lap

Extensions

  • Add a ball, plant and scoop at the end of each lap

  • After each lap, lead runner lies down and other runners jump him

  • One runner at a time, tag new runner at end of each lap

  • Pop pass at the end of each lap, to new lead runner

Quickee

Goal

Teach the tamariki how to do a strong quickee with 2 options (outside or inside)

Set up - 1 cones, 7m from the tryline

  • 2 attackers, plant and perform a strong quickee

Key skills

  • Strong plant and split

  • High speed to draw the defender

  • Take the correct option - inside or outside

Extensions

  • Add a defender

  • Add a cone and a stop watch

  • Add a pass option

  • Add a second defender

Passing and Catching

Goal

Teach the tamariki how to do a strong 5-10m pass from stationary

Set up: 4 rows of cones, 5m apart for spacing purposes

  • Pair up the kids, with a ball between them

  • Start them 5m apart and complete 10 passes and sit down

  • Move the kids back, extend them to 10m and 15m

  • Bring them back to 5m and the completion rate should be better

  • Change arm, pass both sides

Key skills

  • Targets for the catcher

  • Elephant arms to increase power

  • Spiral passes for 10m+

Extensions

  • Catcher can run in to catch short passes

  • Watch an adult throw

  • Add a pass option

  • Add a second defender

Corey Super Pass

Goal

Teach the tamariki how to do a strong 5-10m pass while running

Set up: 4 base cones, 5m apart for distance purposes, and 2 cones to make a tryline

  • Pair up the kids, with a ball between them

  • Ball carrier runs a tight turn around first cone, then passes to partner

  • The catcher times to run with them from the base line

  • Start with a small pop pass, then extend

  • Score on the tryline

  • Change sides, pass both sides

Key skills

  • Timing and distance of the pass

  • Timing of the runner

  • Spiral passes for 10m+

Extensions

  • Add a defender

  • Add slide dive

  1. Grab a partner and stand in opposite lines facing each other

  2. Diamond drill (1x passer, defender, attacker)

  3. ACC cone set up but 7m apart, Defeender to push back and get up to pressure

  1. Initiate touch (short levers), get to the side (hip2hip), bend at knee and hip, squash ball.

  2. Footwork, push through the pocket of the defender

  3. Same as above for planter. Dummy half approach perpendicular, step forward to get planter onside
